My family loves making these ham and cheese sliders with soft Hawaiian rolls, slices of ham, gooey melted cheese, and the most delicious onion butter brushed on top.
Say hello to the most perfect crowd-friendly dish. These ham and cheese sliders are great for birthdays, game day, easy family dinners, and more! Both kids and adults go crazy for them. You may not think you need a recipe for these sliders… I mean, rolls, ham, cheese, done, right?
Well, after serving this exact version to friends and family, we can say you do, in fact, need this recipe in your life. Specifically, the homemade honey Dijon mayo and the onion butter you’ll brush all over the top. Bookmark this one! (It works incredibly well with your favorite deli ham or leftover baked ham).
Key Ingredients:
Bread Rolls:
The popular choice is Hawaiian sweet rolls (they are so soft!), but any package of slider-size rolls, like dinner rolls, works. A 12-ounce package fits nicely in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
Ham:
We’ve used thinly sliced deli ham in our photos, but these rolls are fantastic with leftover ham, too (see our brown sugar baked ham).
You can also swap the ham for sliced deli turkey or chicken. Again, feel free to use leftover roasted turkey or roast chicken if you have it.
Cheese:
Use your favorite sliced cheese. Swiss cheese is classic, but provolone, cheddar, mozzarella, or Munster all work. Just look for something that melts nicely.
Homemade Dijonaise:
To keep your sandwiches from turning out dry, spread a little homemade Dijonaise over the bread before building them. We stir mayonnaise (homemade mayo) mayonnaise (Dijon mustard) and honey together to make it.
Onion Butter:
We make it with onion powder and salted butter, then brush it all over the top of the rolls. If you love the look of black speckles over the rolls, you can also scatter over some poppy seeds. We usually skip this ourselves, though, and prefer that shiny, buttery, golden-brown top instead.
